Invited by Dr.Qingsong Liu and Dr.Xin Zhang, Professor Tim Mitchison, Co-founder and Deputy chair of System Biology Department, Harvard Medical School, visited High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CHMFL) on April 18th 2013.
During his stay in Hefei, Prof. Mitchison visited the life science department and the facilities in CHMFL and gave a talk entitled “New Mechanisms for Old Chemotherapy Drugs”. After the talk, he spent hours to discuss about the researches in the life science labs in the High Magnetic Field Laboratory. He is very impressed by the frameorganization and developing plans for the translational medical research focused life science in hefei . He is especially enthusiastic about the future for the high magnetic field equipments facilitated drug discovery. As a former collaborator of Qingsong Liu and co-mentor of Xin Zhang in Harvard Medical School, he is willing for future collaborations and offering more scientific consultancy.
Professor Mitchison is interested in spatial organization in biology. He discovered “microtubule dynamic instability”, a central principle of self-organization of cytoplasm, and several molecular mechanisms underlying cell division and cell movement. He developed novel small molecule inhibitors of mitosis and is currently exploring the conceptual basis of anti-mitotic cancer chemotherapy. He is the co-founder & deputy Chair of the Dept. of Systems Biology, Harvard Medical School. He also won many Awards and Honors, such as 1988 -1993 Packard Research Fellowship, 1989 -1992 Searle Scholarship, 1997 Fellow of the Royal Society, 2002 Harvey Society Lecturer. Be elected the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. President of American Society of Cell Biology in 2010, published 270 papers that were cited over 14,000 times.
